The fairground had rides and stalls all crammed as close together as possible. If he stared long enough, the makeshift buildings all blended into each other to the point where he couldn’t quite tell where one began and the other ended, so he was looking at a large, colourful mass. The multicoloured fairy lights that had been strung all over the place added even more liveliness, to the point where he felt that the place would explode if anyone tried to bring more colour to it.

Only not. Because there she was, standing and smiling at him, wearing a skirt with multicoloured patterns on it, a light cream blouse and bright green bangles. She looked like she belonged with the crowd and he supposed that he, in the colourful Hawaiian shirt she had bought for him, also looked like it.

He offered his arm with a goofy grin and she gave him the same beautiful smile he fell in love with over and over. His grin widened as she linked her arm with his and he kissed her forehead. “Shall we?”

Buying their entrance tickets, he slowed down so she could decide where she wanted to go first. Smiling at him, she pulled him in the direction of the fastest ride she could find. He chuckled as she followed her, remembering once again how much he loved her thrill-seeking side.

Almost an hour and several rides later, they were far too dizzy to do anything but sit down. She rested her head on his shoulder as they waited for the world to stop spinning. He wrapped an arm around her waist and held her close. “Hungry?”

She smiled. “Yes. But it’s probably not a good idea to eat just yet. I’m happy to sit here with you like this for a bit longer.” She didn’t move and he was glad for it. His hand went up to hold her shoulder and he tilted his head a little so it was touching hers.

“Definitely the best date we’ve ever had,” she murmured, closing her eyes. “Actually, wait. This comes second to that time we went camping. Remember, when we went exploring through that field and got chased by that bull? And then we ended up being chased by some goats too? That was fun.”

He laughed as he remembered it. “That was fun. But Ryuuken’s refused to go on double dates with us since then. He doesn’t know what he’s missing out on.”

She stood and leaned over to kiss him briefly before giving him a smile. “Do you feel like going for a walk?”

They stood, leaving the fairground in favour for a quieter place. There was a park nearby and they sat on a bench there. She reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out his pack of cigarettes and he fished out the lighter from his pants pockets as she withdrew two cigarettes. He lit them and she watched him take a drag before kissing him.

“I don’t know what it is, but every time you put a cigarette to your lips, you look at least ten times sexier.”

Grinning, he took another drag and exhaled at the same time she did. “It’s decided then. I’ll make sure that every time I smoke, it’s around you. It’ll give me more of an excuse to visit you a lot.”

“And you won’t be smoking a pack a day when you get stressed, the way Ishida-kun does. We have different, better ways to deal with stress.”

“Ah, that we do.”

“I love you, Isshin,” she said with a genuine smile. And in the same breath, “I feel like pizza tonight, how about you?”

“Love you too, Masaki,” he replied and linked his arm with hers. “And I was thinking the same thing. We should get Hawaiian, because it’ll match my shirt.”

“Pepperoni would look like the spots on my skirt.”

He laughed and spoke without even thinking. “Marry me. When I graduate med school, I’ll start up my own clinic and we can have five kids. We’ll name them after our favourite foods.”

“I don’t know, sweetie. If we had twins, they’d hate us for calling them Pizza and Pasta.”

“Fruits, then?” he suggested with a grin.

“Fruits,” she confirmed with a nod. “Sounds good to me. Yes I’ll marry you.”
