Klavier was glad that he had chosen a large venue for the concert as it filled quickly. There was an open balcony above the audience, which was where Kristoph and other members of the royal court stood, along with Maya and those with her. For Lamiroir, Klavier had requested a platform in the middle of the audience. A safe distance from Kristoph.

“So once this is finished, we can begin our actual meeting?” Kristoph asked, his chin in one of his hands. He wore the large jewelled crown he always wore in public. Klavier’s smaller diamond-encrusted crown looked absolutely plain in comparison.

“Dear citizens of Ariadoney,” it was Klavier who addressed them. “Today is an important day. It marks the first visit High Priestess Mystic Maya of Kurain has made to our home. I personally brought her here and was lucky to see the beauty of Kurain for my own eyes. Today, Mystic Maya would like you all to witness Kurain’s beauty – in the form of song. It is my great pleasure to present to you: Lamiroir!”

The crowd cheered loudly, to fall into awed silence as Lamiroir sang. They marvelled at the way the air seemed to sparkly and glow. Klavier realised that it was the ward being raised. He felt Daryan’s shoulder against his and drew a deep breath, too anxious to appreciate the beauty of the song that seemed to move even Kristoph. It ended with a note that seemed to float in the air, slowly fading to a silence that was immediately eaten up by a roaring applause. Lamiroir bowed gratefully and Maya cleared her throat and stepped forward.

“Good people of Ariadoney. Members of the court, members of the public. Thank you for gathering here today. I have come here from Kurain for one important purpose and that purpose is—” she turned to look over her shoulder at Phoenix, who watched from beneath his hood. “—If you would please.”

Phoenix slowly walked forward. Miles followed, two steps behind. Kristoph was already frowning. Klavier had to remind himself to breathe.

Without a word, Phoenix slowly removed his hood. Kristoph hissed and Daryan’s hand went to just sword. Just in case. He noticed Miles doing the same beneath his robe.

The surprised gasps and murmurs spread through the audience as more people recognised Phoenix for who he was. Soon, the entire place was alive with chatter and Phoenix spoke,

“Ariadoney.” His voice was loud. It carried not authority, but patience. “I have no doubt that you recognise me. The Phoenix. The same man your king claimed to have slain, declaring that I had taken thirty innocent lives.”

He turned to look at Kristoph, whose eye twitched as he watched in silence. He smiled before turning his gaze to the audience. “He has clearly lied to you all. He lied to his own brother – who believed in my guilt until I proved otherwise. That is what I am here to do before you all.”

The audience erupted into chatter again, interrupted this time by Kristoph.

“Silence! All of you! Are you all so eager to believe his lies that you have forgotten your common sense? Remember what he is! The Phoenix is not human – clearly, he has just been reborn—”

“And grown to this age over the span of seven years?” Miles snapped, pulling his hood off. “What kind of fool would believe that?”

“Miles Edgeworth!” Kristoph’s eyes widened. “You disappeared—”

“When you were crowned as king of Ariadoney,” Miles finished for him. “I refused to serve a man like you.”

“Back to betray Ariadoney?” the king laughed loudly and shook his head. “And speaking of betrayal. You. Klavier!”

The prince shrank back when Kristoph turned to him. Daryan’s grip on his sword tightened.

You. My little brother. Willing making excursion to Kurain to lead men like this into my kingdom. You are disgusting. Disappointing, Klavier. You are a disgrace.”

Klavier flinched at every word. Daryan stepped in front of him and Kristoph laughed even louder as he looked at the knight. “Crescend! I warned you – I warned you that my sweet little brother was up to something. I told you – I gave you an order which you have clearly disobeyed!”

Klavier looked confused, but Daryan scowled. “An order? It was a threat.”

If Klavier is up to anything behind my back that would be of a significant disadvantage to me, kill him with your own hands or I will do it myself! Right before you!”

Daryan heard Klavier’s gasp behind him and drew his sword, blocking Kristoph’s path. “You want him? You’ll have to get through me.”

“Guards!” Kristoph commanded. “Seize them! Klavier! The Phoenix! All of them!”

He looked around him incredulously when nobody moved. “What are you doing? Obey me!”

“Ariadoney.” Phoenix’s voice was softer this time. “I believe you have seen the kind of man your king is now.”

The murmurs of the crowd were louder than ever. Kristoph’s frown deepened when he picked up murmurs of he’s insane and he lied all along. He flinched when he felt his own guards restraining him. “What—?”

“Kill him!” somebody shouted and it became a chorus. Kill him! Kill him! Kill him!

“No!” It was Klavier, who pushed his way past Daryan to lean against the edge of the balcony and look at the crowd beneath him.

“I knew you were weak,” Kristoph scoffed and Klavier frowned.

“I do not want this day to be tarnished by the death of my brother,” he spoke. “…Today is the day the Phoenix restored his honour. The day Ariadoney ceased to be ruled by lies and deceit. Tomorrow, we can deal with Kristoph. For tonight, he can stay in the dungeons.”

The guards dragged Kristoph away, ignoring the way he kicked and screamed. Everybody on the balcony heaved a collective sigh of relief and Daryan hesitantly moved forward, touching Klavier’s arm.

“…Now you know what was bothering me.”

Klavier frowned a little. “Did you ever consider—?”

“Never. But every time I told myself that I wouldn’t, I saw Kristoph doing it instead. I knew I’d put up a fight, but… I wasn’t ever sure I’d win. Not until yesterday.”

“Daryan…” Klavier sighed, gripping his knight’s hand tightly before letting go as the crowd began another cheer.

Long live King Klavier!.

Klavier’s eyes widened and he looked at Daryan, who looked equally surprised.

“Please!” he interrupted, raising a hand for silence. “Ariadoney deserved a better king. One who would bring the peace and justice that we all desire. Somebody like…”

He turned to Phoenix, who shook his head. Laughing, Maya and Miles both pushed him forward.

“Yes, yes! Go Nick!”

“King Phoenix!” Klavier shouted and grinned when the crowd echoed it.

Kristoph’s crown lay on the floor where it had fallen off in his struggle. Klavier retrieved it and held it out towards Phoenix, who hesitated until Klavier lost his patience and lifted it onto the other’s head amidst cheers from everybody watching.”

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Phoenix asked, having to raise his voice.

“You’ll be better than Kristoph!” Daryan assured him, holding Klavier’s shoulders and laughing.

“Not a bad start, I suppose,” Phoenix grinned and turned to Trucy. “This makes you a princess now.”

The girl looked excited at the very thought of it. Klavier stood straight, looking Phoenix in the eyes before bowing. “Your highness.”

“Oh, give me a break, Second in Command.”

“What was that?”

“I need someone to tell me how to run a kingdom. Besides, the crowd already loves you.”

“You’ve been demoted,” Daryan mused, grinning at Klavier. “Congratulations.”

“Just what I wanted,” Klavier smiled.

“Oh. And Miles?” Phoenix turned to him. “I’ll have to build a giant aviary. For dragons. Because you’re staying here.”

Miles shook his head and chuckled. “You make it sound as though I expected any different.”
