“Aren’t you going to sleep?”
Ichigo turned his head slightly at the sound of the voice and Ishida sat beside him. He glances backwards to see Orihime and Chad still asleep before returning his gaze to the Quincy beside him, face glowing orange in the light of the fireplace at the Shiba household.
“Why aren’t you in bed?” he asked and Ishida frowned.
“Your reiatsu,” he whispered, keeping his voice lowered to ensure he didn’t wake the others, “You’re troubled… and you can’t control it at the best of times.”
“My reiatsu is keeping you awake?” Ichigo asked dubiously, raising an eyebrow.
“Yes,” came the short reply and upon seeing the doubt on the other boy’s face, Ishida continued, “I think it was because of that time I released your energy through my arrows on the day of the Menos Grande attack… I’m just a bit sensitive to it now.”
“Sensitive?” the redhead grinned and leaned a bit closer to Ishida.
“When you feel strong emotions, whatever they may be… happiness, sadness, worry… I can feel it because your reiatsu becomes more intense.”
“Well, I guess I’m worried now.”
Ishida frowned, “What about?”
“You guys. I dragged you here just so you can help me do what I need to do. It was unfair of me,” the guilt was so clear in Ichigo’s voice that Ishida felt compelled to touch him, so he did; a hand carefully placed on Ichigo’s shoulder.
“Don’t think like that. We all came by choice. We want to help you. I don’t want Kuchiki-san to die either.”
Ichigo nodded and stared at the fire again, “Thank you.”
“You love her, don’t you? Kuchiki-san.”
“Of course I do,” Ichigo replied and it’s only when he saw the look in Ishida’s eyes that he realised that they were talking about two entirely different kinds of love.
“Um, not like that,” he said and inwardly cringed as Ishida looked at him again.
“You’ve almost died for her once and you’re prepared to do it again,” the Quincy spoke, his voice low and somewhat distant, “I can’t think of any other explanation for it.”
“I’d do that for anyone that was close to me,” Ichigo reasoned, “It’s what I do for my friends.”
“Die for them?”
“I’d do it for you,” he blurted out and instead of freezing up, pushed forward, “I’d do more.”
“More?”
“For you. I’d die as many times as I needed to, if it meant keeping you safe.”
Ishida’s eyes widened as he felt the building reiatsu, “Kurosaki—”
“Please,” Ichigo cut him off and moved closer, holding onto both wrists tightly and looking into the blue eyes, “Ichigo.”
“Ichigo…” the other boy repeated and there was a small silence.
“I can’t take this,” the redhead admitted and Ishida frowned.
“What’s wrong?”
“Once we get into Seireitei, who knows what’s going to happen… what if we get separated? I’m worried about what will happen to you.”
“We’ll be fine,” Ishida murmured, “You need to stop treating them as though they can’t defend themselves, they’ve learned a lot, you know… Yoruichi-san has been helping them learn more about their powers.”
“What about you?” Ichigo pressed and frowned, “I don’t want you to get hurt.”
“I won’t,” the other boy replied, not asking why Ichigo was so worried all of a sudden.
“Promise me you won’t do anything stupid,” Ichigo whispered and looked at the floor.
Placing two fingers under Ichigo’s chin, Ishida forced him to look up and they stared at each other in silence for a moment before moving in unison to close the gap between them. Their lips met forcefully and Ishida was pulled onto Ichigo’s lap, their hands wandering desperately and demandingly. They broke apart gasping for breath and looked into each other’s eyes again. It repeats: their need to kiss, to be physically close to one another, with the underlying fear of saying the wrong thing and putting an end to it all. They were on the floor, with Uryuu on his elbows and knees on top of Ichigo who was lying on his back, their hands in one another’s hair, their tongues struggling for dominance although neither truly cared who won, as long as they could keep this going.
Ishida didn’t need to pay attention to the exceptionally high reiatsu emanating from the body beneath him to know the mix of emotions within Ichigo, feeling rather sure he could match them himself. Instead of kissing the redhead again, he lay down and held tightly onto the other boy’s shoulders.
“I love you, Uryuu,” Ichigo whispered, not knowing what else to say.
Smiling, Ishida stroked the bright hair, “I love you, Ichigo. You’re feeling a lot more relaxed now, aren't you?”
With a grin, the Shinigami held him closer, “Yeah. It feels nice to have you near. I think I can actually get to sleep now.”
“Well, you’re not keeping me up either,” Ishida whispered and they smiled at each other, resting their heads together as they drifted off to sleep, "Good night."
