It hadn’t bothered her for decades, so why did it start again now? It wasn’t something she thought about… ever. Yoruichi was the type of woman who never looked back. She had sacrificed her position as head of the mobile corps for the sake of a friend.
A friend.
They both knew that the word ‘friendship’ did very little to describe their relationship. At least, they once had. Perhaps. It was something they had never spoken about. A mutual understanding that seemed to fade in time until neither of them truly understood what had happened, or what had been.
The thoughts began to bother her mind during her ban kai training with Ichigo. It was night time when he had just finished bathing and he sat beside her as he dried his hair, clearing his throat to gain her attention.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, glancing at him.
“Who is Urahara Kisuke?”
She paused and then frowned, “I’ve already told you. He was the captain of the twelfth division before Kurotsuchi Mayuri. He founded the research department and was—”
“I meant, who is he, to you? How do you know him?”
“We were friends.”
“Were?” Ichigo pushed and Yoruichi began to feel rather irritated, “What are you now?”
Standing up, she walked away, “You’re going to need rest if you want to save Rukia.”
“You didn’t answer my—”
“Sleep.”
There was a silence and she continued to look in the other direction as she heard Ichigo move away and then sighed, looking around at the training ground Urahara had built centuries ago where they had trained in secret.
What are we, Kisuke?
o O o
The door to Urahara Shouten slid open and the cloaked man looked around, wearing his ever-present cheerful smile.
“Yoruichi-san~! I have your milk!”
He was met with silence, but walked to the saucer kept by the stairs and tipped the milk out into the grass and poured some more into it.
“Kisuke-san?”
He froze and quickly straightened up, “Ah! Ururu-chan! You’re not supposed to be up yet!”
“Uh… Kisuke-san, it’s afternoon already. You slept in.”
The shadows over his eyes did well to hide his surprise and his smile never faltered.
“Kisuke-san… why do you always leave milk out for Yoruichi-san even though she’s in Soul Society? Jinta-kun and I have to make sure the other kitties don’t come and drink the milk instead.”
“Ah, that must be why!” Urahara laughed, covering his face with his fan, “Yoruichi-san must think you’re saving the milk for another cat and she’s respectfully keeping her distance too~! Hahaha, Yoruichi-san is too polite for her own good!”
“The Boss is off his rocker again,” Jinta muttered as he watched from a distance beside Tessai, “Even more so than usual. He even slept in and didn’t realise.”
Tessai nodded, deep in thought, “Mmm… he’s been acting strange ever since he sent those kids to Soul Society with Yoruichi-san.”
“You think he’s actually worried about them? He seemed pretty damn confident about that brat’s abilities.”
It was true, Urahara had been bragging about what a good job he had done with Ichigo’s training, so there didn’t seem to be any reason for him to worry.
“Do you miss Yoruichi-san?”
Urahara’s eyes widened, “Eh?”
“You’ve been acting odd since she left with the others,” Ururu pointed out.
The man laughed again and waved it off, “Of course not! They can take care of themselves, I’m not worrying about how they are in Soul Society!”
“Uh, Kisuke-san…” Ururu was about to point out the fact that the question she asked and the question he had answered were two entirely different things, but stopped when she heard another one of his laughs.
“I think I’ll keep the store closed for today~!” he annouced, fanning himself idly and walked inside, “I announce a day off! Go enjoy yourselves, I think I’ll go sleep for a while.”
“Day off?!” Jinta cried and jumped in the air, “Awesome! I’m going to go play some baseball!”
Ururu stood where she was and watched Urahara’s retreating back with concern.
o O o
Brooding never did her any good, but for some reason, she couldn’t stop. Thoughts of one Urahara Kisuke filled her mind and simply refused to leave. Deciding she didn’t really need sleep that night, Yoruichi sat huddled up on one of the large boulders of the training ground and frowned.
I’ll return as soon as we can get out of here, Kisuke…
o O o
“Ah, Ururu-chan, she’s the bright one,” Urahara said as though he were holding a light-hearted conversation as he slid the door to his room shut and glanced at the empty cat basket, “Women are just too perceptive sometimes, isn’t it?”
Resting his cane against the wall and sitting in his unmade futon, he stared at the basket for a long moment and all was silent until he sighed and took his hat off, placing it beside the cat-bed.
“Do hurry, Yoruichi. I don’t think I can take this for much longer.”
