Isshin knew that whenever his wife told him that they needed to talk about something, it would be because he had done something that she hadn’t quite appreciated, and in her kind and patient way, she would scold him for it, usually resulting in no sex for the rest of the week.
So when Masaki told him that they needed to sit down and talk about something important, he had automatically assumed the worst. He didn’t eat very much during dinner, although he would usually be able to finish off most of the food that had been cooked in less than ten minutes, and he fidgeted as he waited for his wife to finish eating.
It had felt like hours had passed by the time Masaki was done eating and they sat on the sofa, as they always did when they needed to Talk. But when she had taken his hand in hers, he was lost. She’d never done that before… what was it supposed to mean? Was he in even bigger trouble than usual? The very thought of it made him snap.
“Masaki my love, I don’t know what I did but I’m really very truly sorry and I promise you that I’ll never ever do it again!” he cried, hugging her to him and not letting go in fear that she would move away.
Instead, she wrapped her arms around him and returned the hug. Isshin decided that for the life of him, he would never understand women. She looked up at him and smiled, and he gave her a suspicious look. It didn’t look like he was in trouble… but he didn’t know what else this was about. It was then that Masaki spoke.
“We’re going to have a baby, Isshin.”
“I’m so sorr—” he paused, blinked and let the words sink in, “WE’RE HAVING A BABY?”
Masaki smiled at him and he took her into his arms, kissing her absolutely senseless.

“You sure you don’t need any help with that?” Isshin asked, hovering around his wife as she carried a pot of food to the dining table. It was Christmas eve and although they had declined the invitation to go to Ryuuken’s Christmas party, Masaki had insisted that they have a mini-feast and had spent the entire week cooking delicious food that Isshin had been looking forward to eating. However, now that the time had come, he was more concerned about his pregnant wife carrying all the food around by herself than he was about eating it.
“I’m fine,” she insisted with a smile, but didn’t object when he took the pot out of her hands and carried it the rest of the way. She sat down with a small sigh, but her smile did not fade as she watched her husband walk around the kitchen, bringing plates and glasses to the table for the two of them.
Once he was sure that Masaki was alright, Isshin stuck to his promise of downing as much food as he could eat, as quickly as possible. He loved his wife’s cooking, almost as much as he loved her, and he knew that it always made her happy to see him eat the food with such enthusiasm. They finished earlier than they usually would and without warning, Isshin picked Masaki up, carrying her to the sofa and carefully placing her down so that she was lying on it. Kissing her tummy, he gave her a wide grin as he sat on the floor near her head.
Smiling in response, she leaned forward to kiss him, wrapping an arm around his shoulders, “You know Isshin, I’m pregnant, but I’m not entirely helpless… you don’t need to do everything for me.”
“I enjoy it anyway,” he replied, kissing her back, “And I know you do too.”
She rested her hand on her tummy, her pregnancy not very noticeable just yet – their future child nothing more than the slightest of bumps. Noticing this, Isshin placed his hand over hers and they rested their heads against each other, a smile spreading across Masaki’s lips.
“Can you imagine… how it’s going to be next year when we’ve got a little one to share our Christmas with?” she asked, and Isshin tilted his head, smiling at the joy he saw sparkling in her eyes.
“I’m going to spoil our baby absolutely rotten! If it’s a girl, I’ll buy her all the dollies she’ll ever want! If it’s a boy, Daddy will play with him all the time, and teach him everything he knows!”
Masaki let out a small giggle at Isshin’s enthusiasm, “You’re really looking forward to being a father, aren’t you?”
Nudging her arm with his elbow, he grinned, “Only as much as you’re looking forward to being a mother.” Then, his expression turned serious and he knelt up, taking his wife’s face in his hands and giving her a long kiss. “But… well, when Kisuke gave me this gigai, I never thought I’d be able to… to have a baby with anyone, you know. You… you must definitely be a woman made of magic, to be blessing me with something this special.”
Wrapping her arms around him, she kissed the side of his neck, “Love you. I’d be happy with you even if we didn’t have any children, but I love seeing the look in your eyes every time you think of our child.”
“I’d say that I’m the happiest man alive,” he murmured, but then grinned and sat on the sofa beside his wife, “But I’ve been the happiest man alive since I first met you, so there’s nothing new about that.”
Resting her head in his lap, Masaki held his hand over her tummy and closed her eyes. “Thank you… for everything you’ve done since you came into my life.”
Leaning back against the sofa, he shut his eyes as well and smiled, “No, thank you for everything. Merry Christmas, my love.”
“Merry Christmas, darling.”
They both drifted off to sleep, dreaming of the next Christmas, and of enjoying it with the child they were going to have.
