They never realised how similar they were, because they were always too caught up with how different they were supposed to be. Quincy. Shinigami. Complete opposites. That was just the unquestionable way that things were.

They were too busy noticing the way one was quiet and the other was loud.

They didn’t notice the way in which they were both irritatingly stubborn.

They were too busy noticing the way one would rush into things and the other would hold back and come up with a plan.

They didn’t notice the way in which they would do everything in their power to accomplish whatever it was they set out to do.

They were too busy noticing the way one was always alone and the other was always surrounded by people.

They didn’t notice the way in which neither of them ever smiled.

Until…


“You know, you two are pretty smiliar,” Mizuiro comments absently, observing the two during one rare lunch time when Ishida has joined them on the rooftop.

Both of them look up in silence. Ichigo speaks.

“What the hell are you talking about?”

Everyone else in their group is looking at them as well now, their attention captured by someone else speaking the words they were afraid to.

“Think about it,” Mizuiro replies calmly.

They think about it.

“I don’t see it,” Ichigo says.

There is a short silence, and Ishida speaks. “I do.”

Ichigo frowns, and thinks harder. They are too different. He doesn’t understand how they can be so similar. He starts coming up with proof as to why they are not similar.

Another moment passes, and his eyes widen.

“Yeah. I do, too.”

The rest of the group look from Mizuiro, to the two boys, in utter disbelief. Ishida looks at Ichigo, and Ichigo looks back.

And slowly, almost as if they are trying to stop themselves from doing it, they both smile. Their smiles, reflected in each other's, are enough to convince them.

Awww, short and sweet. :) They really are a lot alike, and you really do see the similarities by looking at their differences. (Ok have I just had too much cold medicine, or did that actually make sense?)

I think there's a teeny mistake in the last line of the first paragraph - a word left out, perhaps?

Oh good. I was afraid I'd had one too many cups of neo-citran. XD My taste for IchiIshi has been declining (because of the lack of good offerings, as we talked about before), so it's nice to see something like this that makes you think about it, rather than just throwing porn at you (though we like that too. :D).
